About the Temple

Thirunelli sits in a quiet forest valley below the Brahmagiri hills, close to the Karnataka border in north Wayanad. The road in winds through forest and bamboo, and the old granite shrine of Maha Vishnu appears suddenly among green slopes, with hills on every side. Pilgrims often call it the Kashi of the South.

Most people come here for one reason: to perform rites for their departed parents and ancestors. Families walk down to the Papanasini, a clear mountain stream about a kilometre from the temple, offer bali with a priest's help, bathe, and then climb back for darshan of the Lord. It is a place of remembrance as much as of worship, and many visitors find its stillness unforgettable.

History & Aithihyam

The story goes that Brahma, travelling across the earth on his swan, was drawn to this valley and found an image of Vishnu resting in an amla (nelli) tree. Feeling that he had reached Vaikuntha itself, he installed the Lord here; the place became Thirunelli, the 'holy amla'. Devotees believe that at Brahma's request Vishnu made the stream nearby able to wash away sins – hence the name Papanasini. It is also told that Brahma still comes to worship in the dark hours, and so the priest leaves things ready for pooja when he closes the shrine at night.

Other legends tie the place to ancestral rites: Parasurama is said to have performed the last rites for his father here and bathed in Papanasini, and some traditions say Sri Rama did the same. Near the temple is the Panchatheertham pond, with a rock in it that pilgrims honour as Vishnu's footprint.

The temple's real age is not known, but it is clearly very old. Copper-plate inscriptions from the time of the Chera king Bhaskara Ravi Varma (around the 10th–11th century) have been found here, the place is mentioned in early Malayalam literature, and Thirunelli seems to have been a busy town and pilgrim centre until about the 16th century. The shrine has no well: water still reaches it through a long channel of granite slabs from a hillside spring. Local tradition says a princess of north Malabar had it built, first in bamboo and later in stone. On one side stands an unfinished granite corridor; the story is that a Coorg ruler began it without the consent of the local king and the work was stopped. Today the temple is looked after by the Thirunelli Devaswom under the Malabar Devaswom Board.

Before you visit

    Dress code

Traditional, modest clothing is best: a mundu or dhoti for men, and a saree, set-mundu, long skirt or churidar for women. As in many Kerala temples, men may be asked to remove shirts before entering the shrine. For the rites at Papanasini people bathe in the stream, so bring a change of clothes. Rules can change – follow the temple's current notices.

    Entry

Entry customs inside the shrine follow the temple's tradition; please follow the temple's current notices. Ancestral rites (bali tharpanam) are done in batches, usually in the morning: you register at the temple, go down to Papanasini with a priest, and return for darshan afterwards. Mobile phones and photography may be restricted inside.

    Crowds and best time

Karkidaka Vavu (July–August) brings huge crowds, with rites starting before dawn and one-way traffic on the forest road. The new-moon days of Thulam and Kumbham are also busy. On ordinary weekdays the valley is calm. Mornings are best for the rites; the forest road is better avoided after dark because of wild animals, especially elephants. In the monsoon the paths to the stream can be slippery.

    Nearby

Papanasini – the sacred mountain stream, about 1 km from the temple, where bali is offered.
Panchatheertham – the temple pond with the rock honoured as Vishnu's footprint.
Gunnika (Gundika) Shiva shrine – a small Shiva shrine on the path to Papanasini.
Brahmagiri and Pakshipathalam – forest treks in the hills above; only with Forest Department permission.
Tholpetty Wildlife Sanctuary – on the Kattikkulam–Mysuru road, part of the Wayanad sanctuary.
